My laboratory studies synaptic modulation in the hippocampus and cortex of the mammalian brain. Our recent work has focused on the physiologic roles of endogenous cannabinoids and nerve growth factors in various forms of synaptic plasticity that are important for learning and memory. These systems are currently major targets for the development of novel therapeutics for neurologic and neurodegenerative disease. We are in the Department of Neuroscience.

The Neuropeptide Laboratory has been interested for many years in how peptide neurotransmitters and hormones are synthesized, packaged into secretory granules, moved to a site of release, stored until needed, and then released upon command. These studies lead into the areas of cell biology, enzymology, molecular biology, anatomical mapping, control of gene expression, protein-protein interactions, developmental controls over peptide expression and action, and the like.
